Rarotonga Bars

The only bars likely to be open on Sunday are those at Trader Jacks, the Edgewater Hotel, the Rarotongan Beach Resort, Sails Restaurant, and Club Raro.

A good local drinking place is the Cook Islands Game Fishing Club (closed Sunday) near Club Raro east of town. There's a terrace out back with picnic tables overlooking the beach and a large paperback library inside. This is a private club, but a little tact and charm will see you through. On the beach behind the club is the Flying Boat Snack Bar which serves fish and chips.

Other agreeable club bars include those at the Rarotonga Bowling Club (weekdays only) in Avarua and at the Rarotonga Golf Club (closed Sunday) west of the airport.

Chilli's Sport Bar (daily), near Tupapa Community Clinic east of Avarua, shows all major sports matches on a large screen. Pizza is served and the beer is on tap.

The Whatever Bar and Grill (closed Sunday), high on an elevated platform overlooking the sea directly behind The Café, serves a wicked hamburger and nachos. There's string band music Wednesday night.

Café Hideaway Bar and Niteclub, beside the Island Bus stop at Cooks Corner, is a popular local place with a DJ Thursday to Saturday. They open irregularly after 1600 weekdays, after 1300 Saturday.

The Nu Bar (closed Sunday), across the street from Aquarius Rarotonga on the Ocean and right beside the airport terminal, is also known as Barracuda's Bar and Grill. It has an excellent rump steak dinner special, plus fish and chicken. It's the perfect place for dinner before a late night flight.

The Returned Services Association Club or "RSA" (closed Sunday), directly across the street from the airport terminal, is a good place for a beer while you're waiting for a flight. Monday is the big night here with a disc jockey from 2100. It has a pool table, but no food service. Tom Neale (1902-1977), who wrote a well-known book about his experiences living alone on Suwarrow atoll in the northern Cooks, is buried in the cemetery next to the club.

The Roadhouse Bar (closed Sunday), north of the Edgewater Resort in Arorangi, is a large sports bar with live music on Friday nights. Burgers and fish and chips are available. It's a local hangout.
