Blackrock Villas consists of a pair of huge one- and two-story blocks sitting on the hillside like a battery of bunkers. They have full cooking facilities. It's quite a hike to the beach but there's a nice swimming pool.
The Sunset Resort, next door to the Oasis Village in Arorangi, was completely rebuilt after a hurricane in 2004 and only reopened in 2005. This 35-room resort has two swimming pools with three two-story accommodation blocks around the upper pool. Closer to the beach are 19 self-catering units remaining from the original resort in long single-story blocks of four or five units. One two-bedroom beachfront suite is available. Children under 12 are not accepted.
The Manuia Beach Boutique Hotel at Arorangi has 24 duplex bungalows with reduced walk-in rates possible when they have vacancies (children under 12 not admitted). Cooking facilities are not provided but there's a restaurant which has an island night on Saturdays. You can swim off its beach or use the horizon swimming pool.
Raina Lagoon Villas Island Bungalows, opposite Island Car and Bike Hire in Arorangi, has six self-catering bungalows on the south side of the Manuia Beach Hotel in Arorangi.
Castaway Beach Villas, on the beach a little south of the church in Arorangi, offers 12 units with cooking facilities and hot-water showers. There are six pool units, five garden bungalows, and several superior pool units. Avoid the roadside units which are rather noisy from the traffic. There are a communal TV lounge and a restaurant/bar beside the pool. Airport transfers are extra.
The Rarotongan Beach Resort, in the southwest corner of Rarotonga, has been the island's premier hotel since its opening in 1977. In 1997 this family-oriented package tour hotel was made wheelchair-accessible, one of the few South Pacific resorts where this is so. The 156 air-conditioned rooms are in nine one- and two-story blocks (no cooking facilities). Children under 11 eat and sleep free, and a "kids club" for children aged 3-12 operates daily except Sunday. The beach here is much better than the one at the Edgewater Resort, and the swimming pool is fine. Some water sports are included, and spa treatments are available at additional cost. Island nights with traditional dancing are held twice a week. Meals in the restaurant are not cheap but a grocery store is next to the Kaena Restaurant nearby. Airport transfers are extra.
At Titikaveka is the Moana Sands Beachfront Hotel with 17 units in a three-story building including breakfast and the use of snorkeling gear and kayaks. A reduced rate may be available if you book ahead by email. The 12 standard units have limited cooking facilities but the five suites on the top floor have full cooking facilities. The beach is good and some water sports are offered. Use of the internet costs extra.
Tucked away amid luxuriant vegetation near the Flame Tree Restaurant is Sokala Villas, one of the top boutique resorts on the island since 1992. The seven self-catering bungalows are in two lagoonview villas without their own swimming pool and the other five villas with pools or right on the beach. Sokala Villas also manages The Navigator, an adjacent two-story building with two suites. Substantial discounts are available if you book direct two to six months in advance or if you're willing to forego daily maid service. Children under 12 are not admitted at Sokala Villas (under 18 in The Navigator) and there's a four night minimum stay.
Apartments Kakera on the east side of Rarotonga has three luxurious self-catering bungalows. Airport transfers are free.
